UNC Women Win ACC Triple Crown

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The North Carolina women's track & field team won their fourth consecutive ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday with 186.50 points at the Belk Track at Fetzer Field. The UNC men finished third with 104 points, led by individual titles by Daniel Harris (triple jump), Nick Owens (hammer throw) and Noah Cosby (pole vault). The ACC individual champions for the UNC women were Laura Gerraughty (discus and shot put), Carol Henry (3,000-meter steeplechase), Amy Parulis (hammer throw) and Tiffany Flomo (400-meter hurdles).
y winning the outdoor title, the UNC women won the ACC "Triple Crown" as they won this school year's ACC cross country, indoor and outdoor title. The clean sweep for the UNC women is just the second triple crown in ACC history as the UNC team of 1994-95 are the only team to win the triple crown.
UNC also gained two points on Duke in the Carlyle Cup standings as the UNC women finished ahead of the Duke women and the UNC men placed five spots ahead of Duke men. The current carlyle Cup standings are now Duke 12, UNC 10.
On day two, Laura Gerraughty won the shot put title with a throw of 58-01, the top mark in the ACC this year and the second-straight year she has won the ACC outdoor shot put title. Gerraughty's teammate Kelly Fazekas came in third with a throw of 46-10. qualifying her for the NCAA Regionals and setting her collegiate personal record.
Tiffany Flomo won her third consecutive ACC outdoor 400-meter hurdles title, as she set her personal record with a time of 57.31. Flomo won the event by more than one second as the second-place finisher came in at 58.40.
In the men's triple jump, UNC's Daniel Harris won his first ACC title, as he jumped for a mark of 52-04, setting his personal record in the process. Harris picked up ten points for the men's team and qualified for the NCAA Regionals.
Freshman Nick Owens won the men's hammer throw competition as he threw 195-1. The win by Owens gave him his second ACC title, as he won the 2004 indoor weight throw title as well.
In the women's 800-meter, senior Alice Schmidt placed second with a time of 2:07.70 and Erin Donohue came in third with a time of 2:09.43. Schmidt and Donohbue also finished back-to-back in the 1,500-meters. Schmidt ran 4:18.46 for a third-place finish and Donohue placed fourth with a time of 4:20.53.
In the 5,000-meter run, Carol Henry ran 16:16.65 to place second in her first 5k race of her outdoor collegiate career.
In the men's 800-meter, Clay Ragan placed third with a time of 1:51.82 and Andrew Craycraft placed fifth with a time of 1:52.91 as the two combined for 10 points for the UNC men. In the 5,000-meter Brian McGovern ran 14:56.69 for a sixth-place finish and Pablo Durana picked up a point for the Tar Heels with an eight-place finish (15:06.74)
Kevin Watson placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles, with a NCAA Regional qualifying time of 14.33. In the final event of the day for the men and with UNC trailing Georgia Tech by three points for third place, the UNC men's 4x400 meter relay team came through with a third-place finish and a time of 3:12.12 to leap past Georgia Tech for third-place in the final standings.
Carol Henry, Amy Parulis, Laura Gerraughty and Noah Cosby all earned first-place finishes for the Tar Heels at Belk Track at Fetzer Field on Friday.
Day One of the Championships was highlighted by Carol Henry, who came within one second of breaking the ACC meet record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as she cruised to a first-place finish with a time of 10:02.22.
Senior Amy Parulis won the first ACC title of her career as she beat out teammate and defending champion Laura Gerraughty for the women's hammer throw title. Parulis out-threw Gerraughty by just six inches as she reached a mark of 194-8 and Gerraughty tossed a 194-2.
Gerraughty came back later in the afternoon to capture the women's discus title as she threw 173-11 and fellow Tar Heel Marija Kurtovic placed second with a throw of 163-06 as the two combined for 18 points for the UNC women. Karen Wyzykowski placed fifth in the discus for UNC with a mark of 153-8 and Allyson Criner threw 152-11 for seventh place.
For the Tar Heel men, Noah Cosby highlighted the day with his first ACC title, as he claimed the top spot in the pole vault. Cosby set his personal outdoor record with a vault of 17-00 3/4. The vault is the highest by any ACC athlete this season and it qualifies Cosby for the NCAA Regionals.
In the women's pole vault, UNC's Tatyana Kirichenko and Laura Risi tied for second place with a mark of 12-7 1/2. Each athlete picked up seven points for the UNC team. Rhian Jenks placed fifth with a vault of 12-3 1/2 and Terri Matthews earned seventh with a vault of 11-11 3/4.
In all, the UNC team now has 25 NCAA Regional qualifying marks. The team next heads to the Penn Relays April 22-24 in Philadelphia, Pa.
