RALEIGH, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's tennis team, ranked 14th nationally, lost to #9 Clemson 4-1 on Saturday in the first semifinal match of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament held at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center. Clemson, the tournament's No. 1 seed, took the doubles point and three singles matches for the victory over the fourth-seeded Tar Heels.
"I am really proud of the team," said UNC Head Coach Brian Kalbas. "Our ladies deserve a lot of credit for the way they have competed in a first-class manner. Even though we lost, we were right there."
In doubles, UNC freshmen Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long went down to the Tigers' Richele LeSaldo and Karen Rombouts 8-5 in the No. 3 match. Then, Clemson's Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito clinched the point with an 8-6 upset win over #23 junior duo Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline at the top-seeded match.
In singles play, the Tar Heels started off strong, winning the first sets in five of six matches. At the No. 5 seed, Anundsen defeated Ioana Paun of Clemson 6-1, 6-4 for the Tar Heels' sole point of the day. Anundsen adds to her team-high victories at 28-9 overall.
At the sixth seed, Long lost to Clemson's Rombouts 6-0, 7-6(3). Carolina freshman Caitlin Collins took her first set 6-1 from Clemson's Alix Lacelarie, but battled with an injury and fell 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 at the three seed.
Cline also took her fourth-seeded match to three sets. However, Brito clinched the team victory with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win.
The Tar Heels (19-8, 4-4 ACC) do not play until the NCAA Regionals, should they get a bid, on May 14-16 at a site to be determined. Clemson (21-3, 8-0 ACC) will face the winner of the No. 2 Duke/No. 3 Florida State semifinal on Sunday at 11 a.m.
