Tar Heels Drop First ACC Match Of The Season To Duke

DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 14 North Carolina men's tennis team lost its first Atlantic Coast Conference match of the 2004 season Wednesday afternoon as the No. 5 Duke Blue Devils downed the Tar Heels 5-2 at the Ambler Tennis Center.
UNC fell to 20-3 overall on the season and saw its seven-match winning streak end. UNC is 6-1 in the ACC. Duke is 17-5 overall and 5-1 in the ACC. Carolina plays its final regular season match Saturday at No. 33 Florida State at 5 p.m. Duke travels this weekend to play Maryland Saturday and Virginia Sunday.
Carolina started the match in strong fashion by claiming the doubles point. Raian Luchici and Jonathan Janda beat Duke's Stephen Armitraj and Peter Rodrigues at No. 3 by an 8-6 score while 16th-ranked Phillip King and Jonathan Stokke won at No. 2 for the Blue Devils. The Tar Heels claimed the point as the No. 13 team of Nick Monroe and Geoff Boyd upset fifth-ranked Ludovic Walter and Jason Zimmerman of Duke 9-7. The UNC tandem broke Zimmerman at seven all and then Boyd served out at 30 to win the match.
Carolina was unable, however, to maintain the momentum in singles. Duke's nationally-ranked singles players at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 all scored straight set wins for the Blue Devils as Phillip King beat Nick Monroe, Ludovic Walter beat Andy Metzler and Peter Rodrigues downed Derek Porter. Rodrigues, ranked No. 123 nationally, scored the clinching fourth point for Duke.
UNC's lone win came at No. 5 singles where Geoff Boyd continued his winning ways with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Duke's Jonathan Stokke. Duke's other wnners were Jason Zimmerman at No. 4 and Christopher Brown at No. 6.
The match was worth one point in the 2003-04 Carlyle Cup standings, the all-sports trophy competed for between the two schools. Duke won the Carlyle Cup in 2000-01 and 2002-03 and UNC won in 2002-03. Duke leads this year's Carlyle Cup 12-8.
