CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Chapel Hill Sportswear, the University of North Carolina Department of Athletics and Tar Heel men's basketball coach Roy Williams have teamed up to donate $10,000 to the Stephen Gates Scholarship Fund at UNC's School of Journalism and Mass Communication. A formal announcement of the donation will be made prior to the start of Thursday's Carolina baseball game versus NC State at Boshamer Stadium. The ceremony is set to begin at 6:45 p.m.
Gates, who was tragically killed in a car accident on October 4, 2003, was the radio voice of Tar Heel baseball for six seasons. He also handled the play-by-play duties for Carolina women's basketball and served as the sideline reporter for UNC football radio broadcasts.
The donation is a portion of the money raised through Chapel Hill Sportswear's t-shirt sales from the "Turn It Blue" campaign. A donation was also made to the Inter-Faith Council.
Stephen's parents George and Pat Gates and brother Kevin, as well as UNC baseball coach Mike Fox, will be on hand for the pregame announcement of the donation.
