Monroe Wins ITA's Van Nostrand Memorial Award

TULSA, OKLA. - University of North Carolina senior Nick Monroe, a native of Olathe, Kan., was named Wednesday as the winner of the prestigious John Van Nostrand Memorial Award given by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Van Nostrand Memorial Award is a stipend given to an outstanding senior who plans to pursue a career in professional tennis.
Monroe is ranked No. 29 in the ITA national singles rankings and No. 17 in doubles. Monroe is a three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and two-time selection to play in the NCAA Championships in both singles and doubles. He is also second in career singles wins in Tar Heel history with 98 victories.
Monroe won his opening match Wednesday in the 2004 NCAA singles championships. He will open doubles play in the tournament on Thursday with Tar Heel teammates Geoff Boyd.
