The University of North Carolina Task Force on Signage in Athletic Venues passed the following resolution today at its meeting in Chapel Hill. The task force was created in October 2003 at the direction of the Board of Trustees to examine the financial environment in which the Department of Athletics operates and to examine whether new revenue streams should be explored.
The task force was chaired by Director of Athletics Dick Baddour and included several members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, students, University and athletic department staff, Alumni Association and Educational Foundation representatives.
Resolution (Passed) Task Force on Signage in Athletic Venues May 27, 2004
Whereas the task force reviewed a number of options relating to the addition of partner signage in Kenan Stadium and the Dean E. Smith Center;
Whereas the task force understands that the University's history and culture has been to limit and discourage the use of signage in those two venues;
Whereas the task force has identified a substantial need for the Department of Athletics to meet rising scholarship costs, facility demands and sport-by-sport operating budget requirements;
Therefore be it resolved, that the task force concludes those challenges make it necessary to explore signage and other related partnerships, for athletic venues, within the following guidelines; such signage or partnerships should only be introduced in a limited and tasteful way, with a small number of companies that have strong integrity and national impact; accordingly, such relationships would make a significant financial impact within the athletic department; and the partnerships protect insofar as possible the environment and tradition of the institution.
The task force has completed its assigned work and transmits this resolution to the Board of Trustees and the Chancellor with its endorsement.
