Suguiyama, Perruquet Named To CoSIDA District Academic Second Team

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina senior swimmers Yuri Suguiyama and Jessi Perruquet were named Tuesday second-team District Three At-Large Academic All-America by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The at-large team includes athletes in the sports of women's bowling, golf, rifle, men's volleyball, women's crew, gymnastics, skiing, water polo, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, wrestling, field hockey, lacrosse and tennis. District Three covers the states of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
Perruquet, a senior from Danville, Pa., graduated last month from Carolina with a degree in elementary education, compiling an impressive 3.784 grade point average. A four-time All-America and All-ACC freestyle, she was a team co-captain her senior year while winning ACC titles in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. She also anchored Carolina to an ACC title and an ACC record in the 800-yard freestyle relay her senior year.
Perruquet was a 2003 CoSIDA Academic All-America selection and in 2002-03 she was named one of the Top 50 women's swimmers in ACC history. She holds the Carolina record in the 200-yard freestyle and shared the NCAA championship in the event in 2003.
Suguiyama earned majors in both political science and economics while graduating in May with a GPA of 3.518. A native of Ijamsville, Md., he was a first-team All-America selection as a senior while being named All-ACC for the third year in a year. Co-captain of the 2003-04 Tar Heels, Suguiyama repeated as the ACC champion in the 200-yard freestyle in 2004 and was named the team's most outstanding swimmer for the third time in his career.
Suguiyama finished his Tar Heel career holding the school records in the 1000 and 1650-yard freestyles. During his career he was also named the team's most valuable and most dedicated swimmer.
