The University of North Carolina finished in seventh place nationally in the annual Directors Cup, a sport-by-sport competition sponsored by the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA). This is the third consecutive year in which the Tar Heels have placed in the top eight and the 10th time in the 11-year history of the award Carolina has been No. 1 among all Atlantic Coast Conference schools.
Points are awarded by virtue of a school's level of success in NCAA postseason competition. The Tar Heels scored points in 18 different sports, 10 women and eight men. Carolina amassed 925 points, more than 200 points ahead of the next highest finishing team in the ACC.
"Congratulations once again to everyone who makes the UNC athletic department such a special place," says Director of Athletics Dick Baddour. "An institution is only as good as its people and we are blessed to have the highest quality of individuals as student-athletes, coaches and staff. We pride ourselves as having a 28-sport, broad-based program and being consistently good across the board. Another Top 10 finish shows everyone's hard work and dedication is paying off.
"We are most proud that our student-athletes continue to put academics first and our coaches and staff are steadfastly committed to being successful within the rules."
Stanford won the Directors Cup for the 10th year in a row with 1337.25 points. The Cardinal was followed by Michigan, UCLA, Ohio State, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Washington, California and Texas. Other ACC schools in the Top 25 included Duke (18th), Florida State (22nd) and Maryland (24th).
