CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina assistant softball coach Beverly Smith has been elevated to the position of assistant head coach, Tar Heel head coach Donna J. Papa announced Thursday. Smith, a former UNC player, is in her sixth season on the Carolina staff.
"The title change I've decided to give to Beverly acknowledges her efforts and commitment to this program and to the university," Papa said. "She has been essential in the recruitment and development of players that have allowed us to have a lot of success. She's very deserving of this new title."
A 1994 graduate of UNC, Smith coached on the professional and high school levels before joining the Tar Heel staff in 1998. At North Carolina, she coaches the team's pitchers and serves as the program's recruiting coordinator, among other responsibilities.
A standout player for Carolina from 1991-94, Smith was the first Tar Heel to earn an Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year award. The same year she earned that honor, 1994, she also was named All-Southeast Region. She still ranks among the program's top 10 in numerous career batting and pitching categories and 2002 was named one of the top 50 softball players in ACC history.
