The University of North Carolina softball team added three new members to its coaching staff head coach Donna J. Papa announced Tuesday. Janelle Breneman, former head coach at Bucknell University, was named an assistant coach while Dave Young was added as a volunteer assistant. Dana Sorensen, a former standout at Stanford, was named administrative assistant.
Breneman, who also spent five years as the head coach of Division II East Stroudsburg University, is coming off of a successful run at Bucknell, where she was named the 2004 Patriot League Coach of the Year. She also spent two seasons with the Georgia Pride of the Women's Professional Fastpitch softball league.
"I am thrilled to have Janelle as part of our staff here at Carolina," Coach Papa said. "Her experience as a former head coach and pro softball player, as well as her national experience are invaluable. Her enthusiasm and passion for the game is evident both on and off the field. Janelle will work primarily with developing our young infield and overseeing our camps and clinics."
Young has spent most of his coaching career in baseball, having formerly worked as an American Legion baseball head coach as well as an associate scout for the Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
"It is exciting to have another Carolina person on staff," Papa said of Young, who attended UNC from 1990-1993. "The players will certainly benefit from Dave's expertise in hitting. He brings a wealth of knowledge and passion about hitting to our program."
As a college pitcher, Sorensen led the Stanford Cardinal to a berth in the College World Series in 2001. She will serve as an administrative assistant while attending graduate school at Carolina.
"I am excited that Dana will be involved with our program. She brings some great experience to our program in that she participated in the College World Series while a student-athlete at Stanford. Dana wants the opportunity to learn and experience various elements of coaching while making the transition from player to coach."
