The town of South Boston, Va., honored two-time Olympian and Carolina graduate Tisha Waller on Saturday, September 18. Waller, a native of South Boston, was escorted down Main Street by the South Boston Police and followed by the Halifax County High School band, JROTC and track team.
"Ms. Waller is a true inspiration to the youth of our community and an outstanding role model," South Boston Mayhor Carroll Thackston said in a press release.
Waller represented the United States in the women's long jump at the Atlanta games in 1996 and again this year in Athens, Greece. In 2003, she was named the U.S. Track and Field Humanitarian Athlete of the Year for her contributions away from the sport. She speaks for the Anti-Drug Campaign In High School Sports, a division of the Georgia Drug Enforcement Agency. As an elementary school teacher, she was named the 1996 Teacher of the Year at Livsey Elementary School in DeKalb County, Ga.
The South Boston Board and Council have also asked that the new track and field facility at Halifax County High School be named the Tisha Waller Field.
