Tar Heel Swimmers & Divers Impressive In Wins Over East Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams tuned up for a key Atlantic Coast Conference meet with Maryland on Saturday by sweeping East Carolina in impressive fashion Wednesday at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium on the UNC campus. Freshman John Sands and sophomore Casey Kott each scored wins in three events to lead the UNC men to a 145-90 win over the Pirates while freshman Kelly Woodruff had two wins on the women's side to lead UNC to a 139.5-95.5 triumph.
Carolina swam several events exhibition during the course of the meet as the Tar Heel men improved to 8-2 overall on the season with meets against Maryland and NC State remaining on the docket. The UNC women bumped their record up to 9-2 with their season finale scheduled on Saturday at home against No. 12 Maryland.
Overall, UNC's men turned in the top time or score in 12 of 13 events, while the Carolina women turned the trick in 11 of 13 events. Woodruff, from Shoreline, Wash., led the Tar Heels on the distaff side as she recorded first place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.48 and she also had the fastest time in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:58.28, her season best in the event. Fellow frosh Lindsey Marck also had a solid afternoon as the Newtown, Pa., native won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 52.42 while swimming the butterfly leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay and the leadoff leg on the top 200-yard freestyle relay which touched first in 1:37.72. Diane Parker led the Pirates as she had wins in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke to spark ECU.
On the men's side of things, John Sands, a freshman from Granville, Ohio, led the Tar Heels with a win in the 100-yard freestyle as he clocked a season best time of 45.91. Sands also anchored the 200-yard medley relay to victory with a split of 20.22 on the last leg and he had another outstanding split of 20.41 on the second leg of Carolina's 200-yard freestyle relay team which took top honors at 1:23.60.
Both senior Jimmy Owens (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior Eddy Matkovic (Columbus, Ohio) swam on both winning relays for the Tar Heels on Wednesday and Matkovic also took first place in the 50-yard freestyle at 21.54. Sophomore Casey Kott individually won the 200-yard freestyle in his season best time of 1:41.11 and he also went 50.81 to win the 100-yard backstroke in a season best clocking. Kott also led off UNC's victorious 200-yard freestyle relay team. Freshman Ben Herboth of Charlotte, N.C. continued his stellar diving season by sweeping both the one- and three-meter boards against the Pirates.
Sophomore Becky Smock won the 1000-yard freestyle in a season best 10:22.91 and senior John Hartmann swam the same event on the men's side for the first time this season, winning in 9:32.31. Sophomore Erin Cutrell scorched her season best to win the 200-yard freestyle on the women's side in 1:53.65.
