CHAPEL HILL --- Vikas Gowda broke the Atlantic Coast Conference meet record in the men's shot put to lead the University of North Carolina track and field team at the final day of the ACC Indoor Championships Saturday at the Eddie Smith Field House. Gowda and the men finished the meet with 65 points, good for third place behind Florida State (162.5) and Clemson (160). The Carolina women were second with 100 points, as league newcomer Miami took the crown with 138 points.
Gowda established a new ACC meet record, facility record and Carolina record with his second throw of the competition. That effort traveled 64 feet, 3 3/4 inches, almost a foot better than the previous meet record of 63-4 set in 1987 by Clemson's Mike Spiritoso. Gowda's record setting performance capped a great day for the Tar Heel throwers. Kelly Fazekas and Jocelyn White established new personal bests of 49-8 1/4 and 48-9, respectively, in the women's shot put. The duo earned All-ACC honors, finishing second and third behind Miami's Kimberli Barrett.
The Carolina distance runners also had an outstanding day. Erin Donohue won the women's 800 in 2:10.98, with teammates Danielle Rodgers and Georgia Kloss right behind her in second and third, respectively. Donohue also earned All-ACC recognition in the mile, finishing second in 4:42.04. Cassie King was sixth in the mile in 4:56.03. Donohue scored in a third event on Saturday, taking seventh in the 3,000 in 9:38.99. In the men's 800, Bobby Moffat and Clay Ragan each scored. Moffat was sixth in 1:53.92, while Ragan was seventh in 1:54.83.
Four Tar Heel hurdlers scored on Saturday. Kevin Watson earned All-ACC honors in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a runner-up time of 7.98, while ACC heptathlon champion Rob Bates was sixth in 8.16. Lindsay Bond and Porscha Dobson were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the women's 60-meter hurdles.
Tatyana Kirichenko was a medalist in the women's pole vault, finishing in a tie for third with Virginia Tech's Erin Mahony at 11-9 3/4. Rhian Jenks was eighth. Sheena Gordon was seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 41-4 1/4, a day after taking second in the high jump.
John Hubbard finished in a three-way tie for sixth in the men's high jump, clearing 6-8. Britt Taylor was seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 47-7 1/4.
In the final event of the meet, the Carolina women were fifth in the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:45.66. The Tar Heel men were seventh in 3:21.20. The men's meet was decided in the 4x400, as Florida State led Clemson by a mere 0.5 points entering the relay. The Seminoles held off the Tigers with a time of 3:14.07, and secured their third consecutive ACC title.
Carolina will begin tuning up for the NCAA Championships next Saturday at the UNC Last Chance meet.
