
UNC Women's Tennis Tops Fighting Irish 4-3

Notre Dame, Ind. - The ninth-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team bounced back after Saturday's close loss to defeat 20th-ranked Notre Dame 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Eck Tennis Pavilion. Sophomore Sara Anundsen clinched the match at the No. 4 seed after she came back to defeat Lauren Connelly 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Tar Heels went 1-1 on the weekend after just falling 4-3 to fourth-ranked Northwestern on Saturday. UNC is now 9-3 on the season and 5-3 against ranked opponents.
The Fighting Irish took the first point of the match after winning at No. 1 and 3 doubles. Anundsen teammed with fellow sophomore Jenna Long to win at No. 2 doubles, beating Connelly and Brook Buck 8-7(5). With their doubles win against Northwestern on Saturday, Anundsen and Long are 22-5 and have won their last six matches.
Carolina made a comeback in singles play to take four singles victories with wins from Anundsen, senior Kendall Cline, Long and freshman Charlotte Tansill.
Cline, ranked 37th, defeated Notre Dame's Brook Buck, ranked 85th, 6-1, 7-6(5). Cline went 2-0 on the weekend in singles play to improve her record to 24-4. In dual-match season play, Cline is now 10-1.
Long and Jurewitz also went 2-0 on the weekend and continue their respective winning streaks. At No. 3 singles, Long beat Christian Thompson 7-6(6), 6-2. Tansill won at No. 6 with a three-set victory over Liz Donohue. Tansill, who went 2-0 on the weekend, has won her last five singles matches.
The Tar Heels return to Chapel Hill for their next two meetings. On Saturday, Feb. 26, Carolina hosts UNC Wilmington at 11 a.m. and East Carolina at 4:30 p.m.in a doubleheader at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
