Carolina Tennis Wins Second Half Of Sunday's Doubleheader Over Elon

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - With straight set wins at the No. 2-6 spots in the singles lineup and senior Geoff Boyd's career No. 80 doubles win, the 25th-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team swept its afternoon-evening doubleheader Sunday with a 6-1 win over the Elon Phoenixin the evening portion at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels won their seventh straight match to improve to 9-2 as they prepare to open the Atlantic Coast Conference season at home next Saturday against Maryland at 12 noon.
UNC swept all three doubles matches to win the point awarded in doubles and take a 1-0 lead in the match. Senior Geoff Boyd and junior Brad Pomeroy, ranked No. 17 nationally in doubles, scored the win at the No. 1 spot over the Elon team of Austin Fenn and Pramote Malasitt 8-5. The duo has won seven matches in a row and the two are now 20-3 on the season. The win gave Geoff Boyd his 80th doubles win overall in his Tar Heel career. UNC was even more dominant at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles with wins by Sebastian Guejman and David Stone 8-1 and Jonathan Janda and Raian Luchici 8-2.
Carolina received singles wins at No. 2 by Brad Pomeroy, No. 3 by Geoff Boyd, No. 4 by Derek Porter, No. 5 by Benjamin Carlotti and No. 6 by Sebastian Guejman. Pomeroy now has an eight-match singles winning streak and Porter has won six in a row to go to 14-4 on the campaign. Guejman has won seven in a row in singles and is now 8-1 for the season. Carlotti improved to 18-4 in singles with his triumph.
Elon's point came at No. 1 where Pramote Malasitt outlasted UNC's Raian Luchici, 5-7, 6-0, (10-8).
