MADISON, Wis. - In itsfirst road test of the season, the 15th-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team dominated in the first-round of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships, defeating 10th-ranked, and the tournament's seventh seed, Tulane, by a decisive 5-2 score. The Tar Heels (5-0) face Kentucky in the quarterfinals on Friday at 3 p.m. (CST).
"Obviously, it's great to get to the quarterfinals at a national tournament," said head coach Brian Kalbas, who in his second year at the helm has taken the Tar Heels to back-to-back appearances in the tournament. "We fought really hard against a talented team. We had to gut out a lot of tough matches and showed a lot of character tonight."
Sophomore Sara Anundsen clinched the match at No. 3 singles after winning a tough three-set match, 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3. Anundsen has now won her last eight straight singles matches.
Anundsen also clinched the doubles point with sophomore Jenna Long at the No. 2 seed. The pair defeated Tulane's Julie Smekodub/Jenny Kuhn 8-6 to give the Tar Heels their first point of the match.
The other doubles victory came at the No. 1 seed, where 14th-ranked Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis continued their strong play, beating 49th-ranked Darya Ivanov and Maria Ivanov 8-3. Their record is now 14-1.
For Carolina's other three points of the day, #26 Mojzis, Long and sophomore Caitlin Collins all had straight-set wins over their opponents in singles action.
