MADISON, Wis. - The North Carolina women's tennis team fell just short on Saturday, falling 4-3 to sixth-ranked Vanderbilt in the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The 15th-ranked Tar Heels finish the tournament 1-2 and move to 5-2 on the season.
Carolina took the doubles point after winning two out of the three matches. At the No. 2 seed, sophomores Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long upset 20th-ranked Taka Bertrand and Amanda Fish 8-6. The tandem is now 17-4 in doubles play together this season.
The other UNC doubles win came at No. 1, where 14th-ranked Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis beat 35th-ranked Audra Falk and Annie Menees 8-5. The senior pair is now 15-2.
In singles, Cline and freshman Charlotte Tansill had Carolina's lone wins. At the No. 2 seed, Cline beat Vanderbilt's Amanda Fish 6-1, 6-3 to go 2-1 on the week in singles play. Cline also received the USTA Sportsmanship Award, given out on Saturday.
At the No. 6 seed, Tansill won the match after being up 7-6, 1-0 over Caroline Ferrell. Ferrell then retired the match.
The Tar Heels began the tournament on Thursday with a 5-2 win over 10th-ranked Tulane. In the quarterfinals, UNC fell 5-2 to 14th-ranked Kentucky on Friday. The Wildcats will face perennial favorite Stanford in the championship match on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CST).
Next up for UNC is a home match against Minnesota on Friday, Feb. 11. The match begins at 4 p.m. at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
