UNC Men's Tennis Team Defeats Campbell 6-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's 29th-ranked men's tennis team returned to the friendly confines of the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center Saturday afternoon and responded with a 6-1 victory over Campbell, breaking a two-match losing streak for the Tar Heels. Senior Geoff Boyd, junior Brad Pomeroy and sophomore Sebastian Guejman all won in both singles and doubles to lead the Tar Heels to the win over the Camels.
UNC improved to 3-2 with the win while Campbell fell to 0-4. UNC hosts James Madison at 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center following a match between Campbell and JMU at 2:30 p.m.
North Carolina quickly claimed the doubles point against Camels as Sebastian Guejman and David Stone blanked Carlos Campo and Marc Sifre 8-0 at No. 2 and Jonathan Janda and Raian Luchici dominated Ryan Mills and Artoym Starkov at No. 3 8-1. UNC's nationally No. 9-ranked team of Geoff Boyd and Brad Pomeroy also won at No. 1 doubles by an 8-6 count.
UNC went on to clinch the match with a quartet of straight set singles wins in quick fashion at the No. 3-6 spots. Guejman defeated Starkov 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 followed by Boyd's 6-1, 6-1 victory over Campo at the No. 3 spot. Freshman Benjamin Carlotti got the clinching point for the Tar Heels at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sifre and that was followed by Derek Porter's 6-2, 6-0 win over Ryan Mills.
The two teams split the final two matches. Jiri Berenak outlasted Carolina's Raian Luchici at No. 1 singles in a match that was shortened with a tiebreaker played in lieu of a third set. UNC's Brad Pomeroy finished off the day with a 7-5, 7-5 triumph at No. 2 singles over Florent Wilpotte.
This was the sixth time in the last seven years UNC and Campbell have met in men's tennis. UNC will host South Carolina on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 2:30 p.m. in the next home date at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
