FULLERTON, Calif. --- The University of North Carolina softball team dropped its second straight game in the Kia Klassic Thursday with a six-inning, 8-0 loss to No. 24 Fresno State at the Titan Softball Complex. Bulldog starter Jamie Southern allowed only a Jaclyn Holden single and struck out 14 Tar Heels to improve to 7-2 on the year.
Carolina (16-12) never threatened Fresno State, as no UNC player advanced beyond first. In addition to Holden's single in the third, Erin Dudley drew a walk in the sixth.
The Bulldogs (16-5) jumped out early with four runs in the first and one in the second highlighted by an RBI single off the bat of Kristen Sylvester. Carolina starter Alison Yin (6-3) allowed five runs on five hits in two innings. Fresno State added three more in the sixth, leading to the game ending early due to the eight run mercy rule.
Ashley Allen was solid in relief for the Tar Heels, striking out six and not allowing a run until the sixth.
The Tar Heels conclude pool play Friday against No. 5 Michigan. Game time is set for 11:45 a.m. PST.
