CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In an emotional rivalry matchup that went down to the wire, the 13th-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team defeated 16th-ranked Duke 4-3 Wednesday evening on the indoor courts of the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The last time Carolina beat Duke was in 2002, when UNC edged Duke 4-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship finals. The win also marks Carolina's first regular season win over the Blue Devils since 1987, when UNC won 5-4.
The win was especially sweet for seniors Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis. Playing in their last home match of the regular season, Cline and Mojzis led the Tar Heels to a perfect 14-0 home record this year. Both were members of the 2002 ACC Championship team, which was last the Tar Heel squad to beat the Blue Devils.
"You can't paint a better picture than having those two seniors be the last two on the court and both win their matches," said Head Coach Brian Kalbas. In fact, Cline evened the match score at 3-3 after defeating Duke's Jackie Carleton at the No. 1 spot. Cline, ranked 22nd in the nation, won 6-4, 6-3 to move to 33-6 on the season.
It then came down to the No. 2 spot, where 31st-ranked Mojzis won the first set 7-6 over Saras Arasu, but fell 6-2 in the second set. Down 1-4 in the third, Mojzis came back to win 6-4 and clinch the victory for the Tar Heels.
Carolina dominated at the start in doubles play. The sixth-ranked team of Cline and Mojzis cruised over Tory Zawacki and Kristen Cargill 8-1. The 24th-ranked sophomore tandem of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long clinched the doubles point after winning convincingly as well, beating Carleton and Clelia Deltour 8-0 at the No. 2 spot.
But Duke battled back in singles, winning the next three points at No. 6, 5 and 3 to put the Blue Devils up 3-1 in the match.
Playing at No. 4, Anundsen remained tough and won a hard-fought match over Cargill 6-2, 7-6(3). The Littleton, Colo., native is on a six-match winning streak and is a perfect 7-0 in ACC play. Anundsen's win pushed the match score to 2-3. Seniors Cline and Mojzis added the final two points of the match to tip the victory in Carolina's favor. "The team was so geared up to play this match," said Kalbas. "I also wish I had two more years with [seniors] Mojzis and Cline. They've been such great captains and leaders and have done so much for this program."
With the win, Carolina receives one point towards the Carlyle Cup standings. The Carlyle Cup is awarded annually to the all-sports champion between UNC and Duke based on competition in 23 sports. UNC leads the current year's standings by 12.5 to 7.5.
Carolina's record improves to 19-6 and 7-1 in the ACC. Duke falls to 13-8 and 4-4 in the ACC.
The Tar Heels travel south for their final two matches of the regular season. On Saturday, April 16, UNC will face 14th-ranked Clemson at 10:30 a.m. On April 17, Carolina takes on eight-ranked Georgia Tech at 11 a.m. in Atlanta, Ga., for the final match of the regular season.
