Strong showings in the discus and the 800 meters led the University of North Carolina women's track and field team to a second-place finish at the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships Saturday in Tallahassee, Fla. The women scored 122 points to finish 20 behind team champion Miami. The Carolina men tallied 81.5 points to edge Virginia for third place in the team competition. Florida State scored 222.5 points to run away with the title.
Senior Erin Donohue won an extremely tight 800, edging Duke's Lauren Matic by .01 seconds with a winning time of 2:09.06. Donohue led a host of Tar Heel scorers in the event. Danielle Rodgers was third in 2:09.38, Georgia Kloss was sixth in 2:12.99 and Megan Kaltenbach was eighth in 2:15.52, giving UNC 20 total team points. Donohue added another eight points to the Carolina total in the 1,500, finishing second in 4:20.57.
The other big point-producing event for Carolina was the discus throw. Freshman Jocelyn White had a career-best throw of 170-10 to finish second an earn All-ACC honors. Teammate Marija Kurtovic also received All-ACC accolades with her third-place mark of 165-9. Karen Wyzykowski made it three Tar Heel scorers, as her 152-11 effort was good for eighth.
Junior Sheena Gordon scored in a pair of events Saturday. Gordon earned All-ACC honors in the high jump, as she finished second to Georgia Tech's Chaunte Howard by clearing 6-3 1/4, the second-best mark in school history and the best effort by a Tar Heel woman in more than a decade. Gordon also tallied five points in the triple jump with a fourth-place leap of 43-0 1/2. Tatyana Kirichenko joined Gordon as a scorer in the high jump, earning 1.5 points for a seventh-place tying jump of 5-5 1/4.
Other individual scorers for the women were Lindsay Bond (sixth) and Nyoka Norman (eighth) in the 400-meter hurdles and Anna Hay (seventh) in the 5,000. The UNC 400-meter relay team finished fourth in 46.51, while the 1,600-meter relay team was fifth in 3:46.05.
The Carolina men were led by top-five finishes from Vikas Gowda and Noah Cosby. Gowda took fifth in the shot put with a mark of 59-8 1/4, while Cosby tied for fourth in the pole vault after clearing 16-2 3/4. Other individual scorers were Doug Smith (sixth) and Clay Ragan (seventh) in the 800 and Reggie Berry (sixth) in the 400-meter hurdles. The 400-meter relay team was sixth in 41.50, while the 1,600-meter relay was also sixth in 3:13.74.
By virtue of finishing ahead of Duke at both the indoor and outdoor ACC meets, both the men and women earn one point in the Carlyle Cup, the annual all-sports competition between the two schools. UNC currently holds a 16-9 lead and has clinched the Cup for the 2004-05 academic year.
Next up for Carolina is the legendary Penn Relays April 28-30 in Philadelphia.
