The University of North Carolina softball team fell to 24-20 on the season with a 2-1 loss to host Campbell Wednesday afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C. Tar Heel starter Ashley Allen allowed no runs on just two hits over four innings, but did not factor into the decision. Kelly Weaver (6-3) pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win for the Camels.
The game began as a pitcher's duel, with neither team able to push across a run in the first four innings of the game. Campbell (22-18) threatened in the first with a leadoff double and a walk, but left a pair on base to keep the contest scoreless. The best chance for UNC (24-20) came in the fourth, when Anna Evans and Casey Testa led off with back-to-back singles. But Camel starter Lexi Myers retired the next three Tar Heels in order to escape the jam.
Campbell finally broke through in the fifth. Amy Anderson singled off of Alison Yin to score Ashley Marley, who had reached on a leadoff triple. But the lead would be short-lived, as Jessica Young doubled home Anna Evans in the top of the sixth to knot the score at 1-all.
Cox (11-12) entered the game in the bottom half of the inning, but was unable to keep the game tied. After Stephenie Pappas advanced to third on a single, a stolen base and a groundout, Corri Long delivered what would prove to be the game-winner, as she doubled home Pappas.
Carolina would get the tying run to third in the seventh, as Ashley Oxendine walked then advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches with just one out. But Campbell's Lauren Caviness sat down Cassie Palmer and Marissa May to end the game and pick up her first save of the season.
The Tar Heels will travel to Greenville, N.C., Thursday to face East Carolina before coming home to host Virginia Tech in a three-game ACC series.
