CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 14th-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team captured its fifth straight win, cruising over 61st-ranked Maryland 7-0 Saturday afternoon on the outdoor courts of the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Carolina improves to 17-6 on the season and 5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland moves to 7-10 and 1-5 in the ACC.
Carolina will take on the Virginia Cavaliers in another ACC match-up Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The North Carolina men's team will also face Virginia; that match begins at noon.
The Tar Heels won all six singles matches in straight sets. Sophomore Caitlin Collins was the first off the court after she dominated Maryland's Masha Senic 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 seed.
Senior and 31st-ranked Aniela Mojzis then took a 6-3, 6-0 win over Marianna Baker at the No. 1 seed.
Freshman Charlotte Tansill clinched the match with her 6-1, 6-2 win over the Terps' Brooke Rogers at the No. 6 seed.
Other Tar Heel victories were 22nd-ranked Kendall Cline at the No. 2 seed, Jenna Long at No. 3 and Sara Anundsen at No.4. Long is 32-5 and has won her last eight straight matches.
In doubles play, Carolina won at the No. 1 and 2 seeds. Cline and Mojzis, the nation's sixth-ranked team, beat Baker/Graca 8-5 at No. 1. The win marked the duo's 26th win and fifth victory in a row. At No. 2, Anundsen and Long, ranked 24th, improved to 28-6 on the season with their win over Mihneau/Huppes.
Carolina has only two more home matches this season, both of which are ACC conference meetings. In addition to Sunday's match against Virginia, the Tar Heels face No. 12 Duke on Wednesday, April 13, at 6 p.m. The match marks the final home match for seniors Cline and Mojzis.
