Carolina Women's Tennis Blanks Richmond 4-0 In NCAA First Round

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 13th-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Tournament after cruising past Richmond 4-0 Friday morning at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. UNC improves to 21-9 while the Richmond Spiders move to 14-10. Carolina now leads the series 15-2.
Carolina will play on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center and will face the 15th-ranked Duke Blue Devils. Duke defeated No. 32 Michigan 4-1 Friday afternoon in the other first-round match of the day. The winner of Saturday's match will advance to Athens, Ga., for the round of 16.
Carolina defeated Duke 4-3 on April 13 in Chapel Hill, N.C. The win marked the first time since 1986 that Carolina defeated Duke in a regular-season match.
Making its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance, Carolina jumped to a quick 1-0 lead over Richmond after winning at No. 1 and 3 doubles. The fifth-ranked tandem of Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis were the first off the courts as they defeated Richmond's Lindsay Cox and Meghan Wolfgram 8-0 at the No. 1 spot. The win marked the 30th for Cline and Mojzis this year. The senior pair is 30-7 overall and 20-6 in dual-match play.
Caitlin Collins and Tanja Markovic clinched the doubles point at No. 3 with their 8-1 win over the Spiders' Beatrice Grasu and Jelena Zivanovic. Collins and Markovic improve to 7-3 overall.
Freshman Charlotte Tansill moved the match score to 2-0 after her 6-0, 6-0 win over Zivanovic at No. 6. Tansill is now 24-15 overall and 15-11 in dual-match play.
At No. 5, Collins only dropped one game as she took a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Grasu. The sophomore is 19-17 overall and 14-13 in dual-match play.
Sophomore Sara Anundsen clinched the match with her 6-3, 6-3 win over Wolfgram at No. 4. Anundsen moves to 26-11 overall and 18-7 in dual-match play.
This is the fourth straight year that Carolina has hosted a regional in the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament. Carolina is 5-1 in NCAA home matches, advancing to the round of 16 two of the last three years. Last year, UNC defeated Winthrop 4-0 in the first round, but fell to Tennessee 4-3 in the second-round.
