
UNC Falls To Boise State In NCAA Tournament

BOISE, IDAHO - The North Carolina men's tennis team, ranked 34th nationally, fell to host Boise State 4-1 Friday night in the opening round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. Sophomore Sebastian Guejman had the lone singles win for the Tar Heels as the host Broncos advanced to the NCAA second round.
The Tar Heels saw their 2005 season end with a record of 16-11. Boise State improved to 31-7. The Broncos will meet No. 16 Texas A&M Saturday for the Boise regional championship and a chance to advance to the Final 16 of the NCAA Tournament which begins next Saturday in College Station, Texas.
Boise State went up 1-0 by earning the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matchups. Boise State had wins at No. 1 and No. 2 while the Tar Heels earned the win at No. 3 doubles as sophomore Aly Mandour and junior Derek Porter defeated Eric Roberson and Brett Werbeck 8-6. The Broncos, however, earned the point as Thomas Shoeck and Luke Shields combined to beat UNC's Geoff Boyd and Brad Pomeroy 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and Ikaika Jobe and Matias Silva edged Jonathan Janda and Raiana Luchici 9-7 at No. 2.
The Broncos won the first set in singles in three of the six matches and went on to claim all three of those matches to eventually win the match. Eric Roberson extended BSU's lead to 2-0 with a win over Jonathan Janda 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5.
Carolina cut the lead to 2-1 as sophomore Sebastian Guejman persevered to defeat Beck Roghaar 7-6, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Boise State went on to win the match with wins at No. 2 as Thomas Schoeck downed Brad Pomeroy 6-4, 6-4 and at No. 1 as Luke Shields won a close fought match against Raian Luchici 6-4, 7-6.
At both No. 3 and at No. 4, the players on the court split the first two sets with Geoff Boyd and Derek Porter of Carolina winning the opening sets at both slots in the lineup and then going to third sets. Both matches were stopped when the Broncos clinched the overall match.
