The University of North Carolina softball team was awarded an at-large bid to the NCAA softball tournament during the selection special Sunday night. The Tar Heels will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., where they will join the host Wolverines, Seton Hall and Canisius.
"We're excited to be going to regionals again," head coach Donna J. Papa said. "Obviously when you are going into a region with the No. 1 overall seed (Michigan), it's a very tough draw. But it's nice to have the opportunity to keep playing.
The Tar Heels will open play on Friday, May 20, against Seton Hall. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
"Seton Hall was the team that knocked us out last year, so we are really motivated to avenge that loss," Papa said. "All the teams in our region are formidable opponents, and I think the competition will great."
Carolina is making its third straight trip to the tournament, and the fourth in program history.
"Making the regionals is something we want to make a tradition at UNC," Papa said. "We want to get to where we expect to make the tournament."
