College Station, Texas - North Carolina junior Raian Luchici lost a three set battle against San Diego's Pierrik Ysern in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championships Wednesday afternoon at Texas A&M University. Ysern, who is ranked 10th nationally in singles, broke serve in game six of the third set to go up 4-2 and complete the 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory.
Luchici compiled an overall 25-14 record this season at Carolina, playing primarily at the number one singles position. All but two of his losses were to nationally ranked players. Luchici defeated seven nationally ranked players this season including Duke's Ludovic Walter (currently ranked 5th) and Florida State's Mat Cloer (currently rated 26th). Luchici is a two-time All-ACC selection and was named to the Dean's List in the spring semester.
This marks the 14th time in the last 16 seasons that Carolina's top singles player has advanced to the NCAA Singles Championships. Carolina also advanced to the NCAA team championships for the 11th time in Coach Sam Paul's 12 years as head coach.
