Carolina Kicks Off 2006 Season With UNC Opener

CHAPEL HILL --- The University of North Carolina men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2006 season Saturday, hosting the UNC Opener at the Eddie Smith Field House. The Tar Heel contingent was mostly newcomers making their collegiate debuts, but several upperclassmen were in action as well. Juniors Kelly Fazekas and Rhian Jenks were individual event winners. Fazekas took the women's shot put with a throw of 46-8, while Jenks won the women's pole vault with a top height of 11-11 3/4.
Sophomore Jocelyn White, last year's ACC Indoor Freshman of the Year, won the weight throw with a mark of 58-9 1/2. Other women's performances of note included Porscha Dobson's third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.64), Ashley Haislip's second-place finish in the high jump (5-6) and Sheena Gordon's second-place finish in the triple jump (40-10 1/2).
On the men's side, freshman Tristram Thomas was second in the 3,000-meter run in 8:28.99, sophomore Jared O'Connor was third in the pole vault with a top height of 15-7 and the distance medley relay was victorious in 10:10.71. Ian Reynolds, a sophomore transfer from Dartmouth, was second in the shot put (53-11) in his first action as a Tar Heel.
Carolina is in action again Jan. 20-21 at the Clemson Invitational.
