CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 31st-ranked University of North Carolina men's tennis team opened its 2006 dual match season Saturday with a pair of 7-0 shutout victories over Campbell and Elon in a doubleheader held at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the UNC campus.
The doubles pair of seniors Raian Luchici and Brad Pomeroy won both matches they competed in. The pair, ranked No. 1 in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, defeated Campbell's team of Florent Wilpotte and Gabriel Delarue 8-2 in the first match of the day and took out Elon's Damon Gooch and Austin Fenn 8-6 in the second match.
In singles action, Luchici and Pomeroy each posted two victories. Luchici, ranked No. 5 in the country by the ITA, defeated Wilpotte 6-2, 6-2 in the first match and Gooch 6-2, 6-0 in the second match. Pomeroy earned victories over Campbell's Carlos Campo 6-1, 6-2 and Elon's Sebastian Bredberg 6-4, 6-3.
Freshman Taylor Fogleman, a New Orleans, La. native, won the first two dual matches of his singles career, defeating Campbell's Sebastian Thesleff 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 and Elon's Kevin Beard 6-2, 6-0.
Senior Derek Porter and sophomores Sebastian Guejman and Will Plyler also posted singles victories against Campbell and Elon.
"I saw some good things and some bad things," said head coach Sam Paul. "It's the first two matches of the year so we're definitely just getting back to work in practice Monday morning."
The Tar Heels next action will come at home Jan. 28 against No. 51 Northwestern, a team that defeated the Tar Heels last season. "Northwestern's a good team and they've had a couple wins already this year," Paul said. "They beat us last year at Northwestern so it will be a very tough match for us."
