Chapel Hill, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team finished a big weekend Sunday with a pair of 7-0 shutout victories over Gardner-Webb and North Carolina A&T at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the UNC campus.
After defeating No. 51 Northwestern on Friday and attending assistant coach Don Johnson's induction into the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday in Pinehurst, the team capped the weekend by sweeping the doubleheader. With the wins the Tar Heels move to 5-0 on the year.
"It was a great weekend because I was so happy that we won against Northwestern and I'm even more happy for Don. Our entire team was able to be there last night to watch Don get inducted," said North Carolina head coach Sam Paul. "Today, I thought we were a little bit tired, but I was happy that they were focused and stayed focused."
The Tar Heels, ranked No. 31 in the nation, shuffled both their doubles and singles lineups Sunday. Aly Mandour, a senior from Cairo, Egypt, saw his first dual match action of the season in the first match of the day against Gardner-Webb. Mandour teamed with fellow senior Brad Pomeroy at the No. 3 spot. The duo scored an 8-2 win over the Bulldogs' pairing of Brad Clinard and Ryan Bernthal.
"We've got a deep team so we want to get everyone a chance to play," said Paul. "We're still trying to figure out what our best lineup is going to be. We've got a really competitive group and the team knows this. It's still early in the season so we want to give everyone a chance and make sure we're putting the best six guys out there that we can."
The duos of Lenny Gullan and David Stone at No. 1 and Sebastian Guejman and Raian Luchici at No. 2 also earned wins for the Tar Heels against the Bulldogs.
In singles action, Sandeep Daiya played his first dual match of year earning a victory over Kim Ellis 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot.
Raian Luchici, the No. 5-ranked player in the country, bounced back from a loss Friday to Northwestern's Christian Tempke by earning a victory over Gardner-Webb's Roberto Vasquez 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and sophomore Will Plyler posted an impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory over Clinard at the No. 5 singles spot.
Sebastian Guejman, Benjamin Carlotti and Pomeroy also posted singles victories over the Bulldogs.
In the second match of the day against North Carolina A&T, the Tar Heels earned the doubles point after victories by Gullan and Stone at No. 1, Mandour and Pomeroy at No. 2 and Luchici and freshman Taylor Fogleman at No. 3
Karl Wishart, a sophomore from Baden-Baden, Germany, scored the first singles point for the Tar Heels, defeating Quincy Hawley 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6. The victory was Wishart's first dual match of the season.
Luchici, Pomeroy, Carlotti, Plyler and Stone also posted victories for the Tar Heels against the Aggies.
Plyler's victory, a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Jared Martin, pushed his streak of consecutive games won to 32. The streak dates back to Friday's match against Northwestern when Plyler scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the Wildcats' Alexey Evstratenkov.
"Will's playing solid, disciplined tennis," said Paul. "He's worked hard. We've got a lot tougher competition coming in so we'll try to get him pushed a little bit more in practice, but I'm proud of Will because he's worked hard and he's stayed the course."
