PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. --- Austin Smith, Katrina Tsang and Sanaz Marand each won three matches in the prequalifying round to advance at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. By virtue of advancing through the prequalifying tournament, the trio will move to the qualifying tournament Oct. 3-4.
Smith topped two of the tournament's top 16 seeds en route to moving through prequalifying. She opened play with a 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (4) win over Princeton's Melissa Saiontz and followed that with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kristin Nedeltcheva of UNLV. Smith then topped sixth-seeded and No. 96 Alex Haney of Auburn, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, to advance.
Like Smith, Tsang needed three sets in her first-round victory over Ilona Somers of Ole Miss, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. She added straight-set wins over UC Irvine's Ana Agababian (6-2, 6-3) and Maryland's Elenor Peters (6-0, 6-1) to qualify.
Marand bested Vanya Corovic of Texas in the opening round, 6-4, 6-1. She then dropped DePaul's No. 121 Beatrix Csordas in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, before getting past Wake Forest's Sierra Poske in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Play in the qualifying draw will begin Tuesday with first and second round action.
Smith, Tsang, Marand and Caitlin Collins also competed in the doubles draw, but neither pair advanced from the prequalifying round.
