WINDERMERE, FLA. - After a tightly contested first round of the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational in which only seven shots separated the top 13 teams, the University of North Carolina men's golf team found themselves in the relatively unfamiliar eighth spot in the team standings. In three previous tournaments, the Tar Heels had not finished any single round lower than a tie for fourth. Nevertheless, after shooting an eight-over 296, Carolina is only five strokes back of leader Georgia and well within striking distance.
The Bulldogs used a pair of under-par individual scores to jump out to the one stroke lead over second place South Carolina Sunday. The SEC-themed top three continues with Tennessee in third place while Texas, Oklahoma State and Florida sit in a three-way tie for fourth at six-over.
As tight as the team standings were on Day One, the individual race may have been even closer. Thirty-eight players are within five strokes of the lead, including 18 that shot even par or better. Florida's Toby Ragland will enter the second round atop the leaderboard after carding a three-under 69. There is then a five-way tie at two-under and another five golfers tied at one-under-par.
Senior Martin Ureta posted the lowest socre for the Tar Heels Sunday shooting even-par on both the front and back nine for a 72. Ureta made pars on 14 of the 18 holes while also notching two birdies and two bogeys. Fellow upperclassman Barden Berry also had a strong round with a one-over-par 73. The junior from Kinston, N.C. worked around three mid-round bogeys to finish strong going one-under on his final seven holes. Sophomore David Holzworth continues to play well finishing one stroke behind Berry at two-over 74. Senior Reed Darsie shot even-par on the back nine to finish with a five-over 77. Sophomore Robert Riesen struggled for the first time this season after shooting 76 or better in all nine of his previous competitive rounds.
The Heels will be back at it again tomorrow as play continues with the early tee times starting at 8 a.m. on the Isleworth Country Club golf course in Windermere, Florida.
