Gordon, Gerraughty Lead Tar Heels At Virginia Tech

LACKSBURG, Va. --- Seniors Sheena Gordon and Laura Gerraughty reached NCAA automatic qualifying marks to lead the University of North Carolina track and field teams at the Virginia Tech Challenge Saturday at Rector Field House. Gordon cleared a season-best 6 feet, 1/2 inch (1.84 meters) to win the high jump, while Gerraughty threw a season-best 61-9 3/4 (18.84m) to win the shot put.
In other action, Tar Heels registered season highs in several events. Freshman Ashley Haislip cleared a career-best 5-7 (1.70m) to finish third in the high jump. Junior Britt Taylor had a season-best mark of 23-10 (7.26m) to take third in the long jump. Senior Vikas Gowda hit an NCAA provisional mark of 61-5 3/4 (18.74m), his best of 2006, to finish second in the shot put.
On the track, junior Porscha Dobson wrapped up a fast weekend by taking third in the 60-meter dash (7.77) and second in the 60-hurdles (8.44). Sophomore Reggie Berry just missed a provisional qualifier in the 200 with his third-place time of 21.45. Both 1,600-meter relays also ran season bests - 3:44.20 for the women and 3:15.26.
Next up is the ACC Championships next weekend back in Blacksburg. Action starts Thursday, Feb. 23.
