Gordon, Throwers Lead UNC At Charlotte Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Sheena Gordon and Laura Gerraughty were double event winners, and Nick Owens and Justin Ryncavage added individual event wins for the University of North Carolina track and field teams at the Charlotte Invitational Saturday at Irwin Belk Track. Gordon took the high jump and triple jump, Gerraughty won the shot put, Owens triumphed in the hammer throw and Ryncavage came out on top in the javelin.
Gordon, the 2006 NCAA Indoor champion in the high jump, hit a regional qualifying mark of 5 feet, 8 3/4 inches (1.75 meters) en route to her win. She also won the triple jump with a top mark of 42-0 1/2 (12.81m).
Gerraughty had a regional qualifier in the shot put, besting the field by more than 10 feet with a winning throw of 61-6 3/4 (18.76m). Gerraughty also rolled in the discus with a regional qualifying toss of 180-4 (54.98m). Teammates Marija Kurtovic and Jocelyn White were second and third in the event, with both hitting regional qualifiers.
Owens had a pair of regional qualifying marks. The Shelton, Wash., junior won the hammer with a heave of 213-8 (65.13m). He was also second in the discus with a top mark of 177-1.
Ryncavage won the javelin throw for the second straight weekend with a regional qualifying mark of 237-0 (72.23m).
Two other Tar Heels achieved regional qualifying performances Saturday. Britt Taylor was second in the long jump with a leap of 24-3 1/2 (7.40m), while Kelly Fazekas was second in the shot put with a throw of 48-8 (14.83m).
Carolina returns to action next weekend with the Texas Relays and the Duke Invitational.
