WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Laura Gerraughty claimed her second Atlantic Coast Conference title in as many days and Vikas Gowda broke a school record to lead the University of North Carolina track and field teams on day two of the ACC Outdoor Championships Friday at Kentner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest. Both the men and women stand in third place entering the final day of competition.
Gerraughty added the women's shot put crown to her hammer title from Thursday. The Nashua, N.H., senior topped the field by more than two meters with her top mark of 61 feet (18.59 meters). With the winning throw, which was also an ACC meet record, Gerraughty became just the second athlete to win the shot put title three times.
Gowda topped the Carolina school record in the men's shot put with a second-place mark of 62-8 (19.10m). His record-breaking throw came on his third attempt and added more than a foot to former Tar Heel Allen Bradd's old record, which had stood since 1999.
Two other Carolina shot putters scored on Friday. On the women's side, Jocelyn White was seventh with a top mark of 47-3 (14.40m). Ian Reynolds scored for the men, taking eighth with a throw of 52-1 (15.87m).
Friday also featured the conclusion of the men's decathlon. Daniel Keller scored for the Tar Heels with a sixth-place score of 6,529 points. His top event was the pole vault, in which a top height of 14-9 earned Keller 760 points.
Cassie King just missed All-ACC honors in the women's steeplechase with a fourth-place finish. Her time of 10:33.17 in the 3,000-meter race was less than five seconds behind third-place finisher Kris Roth of NC State.
Sheena Gordon earned the Tar Heel women two points with a seventh-place finish in the long jump, an event she had not competed in so far in 2006. Her leap of 19-6 1/4 (5.95m) was the best for a Carolina woman this year. In the men's long jump, Britt Taylor paced the Tar Heels with a fifth-place effort of 24-4 1/4 (7.42m). Reggie Berry added an eighth-place finish with a mark of 23-8 3/4 (7.23m).
Berry was one of several Tar Heels to qualify for Saturday finals. His personal-best time of 21.18 in the 200 was good for second in his heat. Berry also qualified for Saturday's final in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 52.37.
On the women's side, Carolina had a solid showing the middle distance events. Georgia Kloss, Megan Kaltenbach and Brie Felnagle all advanced to the 800-meter run finals, while Kaltenbach and Felnagle also moved on in the 1,500.
Colleen Farley and Nyoka Norman gave the Tar Heels two women in the 400-meter hurdles final, as Farley clocked a personal-best time of 1:00.25 and Norman also had a PR of 1:00.82.
Through eight events, Clemson leads the men's competition with 51 points. Florida State stands in second with 48 points, while UNC has 45 points in third.
Through seven events, Florida State leads the women's competition with 46 points. Virginia Tech follows in second with 39 points, while Carolina is third with 35 points.
Saturday's competition begins at 10 a.m. with the women's javelin. The 400-meter relay is the first running event, set to begin at 1 p.m.
