
Tar Heel Tennis Team Clinches Winning ACC Record With Win Over BC

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - The ninth-ranked University of North Carolina men's tennis team finished off a 3-0 week in Atlantic Coast Conference action as the Tar Heels defeated Boston College Sunday afternoon 6-1. The Tar Heels improved to 21-2 overall and 6-2 in the ACC as UNC clinched a winning conference record after going 4-6 in the ACC last season. UNC has posted a winning record in conference play in 11 of coach Sam Paul's 14 seasons as head coach.
UNC won 24 of 26 games in doubles as all three Tar Heel team posted decisive victories, staking UNC to a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles, coach Sam Paul rested a Tar Heel starter for the second straight match at No. 18-ranked Raian Luchici took the day off after senior Derek Porter did so on Friday in a 7-0 win at Maryland.
UNC won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, dropping only 21 games in the No. 2 through No. 6 flights combined. Porter, Benjamin Carlotti, Sebastian Guejman and Will Plyler all won in dominating fashion at No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, and senior Aly Mandour, who replaced Luchici in the lineup defeated Dennis Reardon without losing a game at No. 6, triumphing 6-0, 6-0. Senior Brad Pomeroy took over the No. 1 spot in the lineup but fell to Soma Kesthely in a match tiebreaker by a 10-8 score after the two players split the first two sets. oston College is 5-15, 0-9 in the ACC.
Carolina faces its most challenging week of the season in the next seven days. UNC plays two ACC teams with higher rankings, meeting No. 6 Duke Wednesday in Durham, N.C. with a 2005-06 Carlyle Cup competition point on the line. Friday UNC meets No. 8 Virginia at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center and the Tar Heels will host Senior Day for four seniors next Sunday against Virginia Tech at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
