CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina fencer Steven Piantadosi has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Piantadosi was one of 16 student-athletes named to the men's at-large team, which includes participants in the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
Piantadosi, a 2006 Carolina graduate from Reisterstown, Md., earned a double major in mathematics and linguistics with a 3.94 grade point average, the highest of any UNC senior student-athlete. An NCAA qualifier and participant in 2006, he received the team's Award of Excellence in foil all four years of his career. He was an All-MidAtlantic/South Regional selection in 2006 and served as captain of the men's foil squad for three years. A Phi Beta Kappa inductee and honors graduate, he received the top departmental award in both of his majors. He also was the recipient of an ACC Senior Scholar-Athlete Award, which goes to one male and one female student-athlete at each ACC school.
Piantadosi plans to enroll at MIT this fall to begin work toward a Ph.D. program in the school's Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department.
Nominees for Academic All-America honors must be starters or key reserves on their teams, must carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better, and must have reached at least sophomore standing.
