CHAPEL HILL --- After a series of solid races to start her collegiate career, freshman Callie Pottinger broke through in a big way on the first day of the UNC Fast Times meet held at the Eddie Smith Field House on Friday, claiming her first event title in just her third competitive appearance.
Pottinger bested the field in the 400 meters with her 56.19 time - her best clocking of the season. She was joined by three teammates under the one-minute mark as UNC put four runners in the top 10. Niobra Peterson finished fourth in 58.19, and Brandi Kellam came in at 59.62 to finish eighth, just ahead of Nyoka Norman's 59.79, which put her in ninth position.
North Carolina also had a strong showing in the women's weight throw on the first day of competition as junior Jocelyn White posted a 54-9 1/2 mark to finish third. Freshman Norjai Palma used a 45-9 1/4 toss to end up in ninth place.
Freshman Alexandra Coppadge placed fourth in her first collegiate pentathlon, compiling 3196 points.
The Carolina men also enjoyed considerable success in the 400 meters, posting second- and third-place finishes in the event. Another freshman led the way, as Brycen McCrary ran a 49.93 and was followed sophomore Ryan Booker in 49.90.
The men's triple jump saw three Tar Heels in the top 10, led by Gareth Keah's fifth-place earning, 44-4 1/4 mark. Edward Baldwin was right behind him in sixth, recording a jump of 44-2 1/2. Wesley Scercy came in 10th with a 41-8 mark.
Other highlights on the men's side on the first day included a second-place showing by the men's distance medley relay team and a collection of impressive efforts in the men's heptathlon. With only two events in the heptathlon remaining, Daniel Keller sits in third position, Mateo Sossah in fourth and Matthew Villemain in seventh.
Competition will resume at 10:45 Saturday morning and is scheduled to conclude in the late afternoon.
