CHAPEL HILL - Five individual event winners highlighted the second and final day of competition for the Tar Heels at the UNC Fast Times meet held Saturday at the Eddie Smith Field House. In addition to those stellar performances and Callie Pottinger's win in the women's 400 meters Friday, the North Carolina men also claimed the title in the 4x400-meter relay, adding to Carolina's impressive performance on the weekend.
Senior All-America Clay Ragan helped propel the Tar Heel men Saturday with his win in the men's 800, an event he won by more than four seconds in 1:51.11. His time was just shy of an NCAA provisional mark in his first time running the event this season.
The men also received a winning effort from freshman Edward Baldwin III in the men's long jump, the first title of his young career. He used a 22-11 mark to surpass the field and was joined by teammate Kevin Patterson (21-7 1/4) in fifth.
On the women's side, Porscha Dobson, Ashley Haislip and Rhian Jenks all gave the Tar Heels individual crowns.
Dobson took the 60-meter hurdles in 8.54, while teammate Vanneisha Ivy finished fourth, clocking a 8.61 time. Haislip was the champion in the women's high jump, using a 5-8 clearance to best the field. In the women's pole vault, Jenks' 12-5 1/2 height was the best on the day, and UNC had two more athletes in the top five as Abby Kimball and Alison McGinnis put up identical 11-5 3/4 marks to tie for fourth.
The event winners were hardly the only standouts for Carolina on the day. The UNC men collected three individual second-place finishes: from Reggie Berry in the 200 meters (22.08), Donte Nall in the high jump (6-8), and Daniel Keller in the heptahlon (4874 points). Mateo Sossah (4889 points) and Matthew Villemain (4188 points) finished third and sixth in the event, respectively. With their scores, Keller and Sossah moved to second and third all-time in school history in the heptathlon. Additionally, the men's distance medley relay team was second in 10:28.77.
Also of note for the men was Ian Reynolds, who placed third in the shot put with a 54-3 3/4 throw. In the men's mile, North Carolina put four runners in the top seven and swept the three through five positions. Nick Krouse finished third in 4:24.75, Ryan Shaver was fourth in 4:25.54, Jeremy Hyder came in fifth in 4:25.69 and Nate Smith placed seventh in 4:29.61.
The Carolina women posted a 2, 4, 6 finish in the 60 meters, with Tyra Johnson leading the way in 7.51 seconds. Judith Bataille was fourth with her 7.68 time, while Shardae Anderson's 7.71 put her sixth. Bataille picked up a fifth-place finish in the 200 meters as well, turning in a 25.44 performance.
Freshman Kim Warren gave the Tar Heels a second-place finish in the women's shot put with her 48-3 1/2 mark. Classmate Norjai Palma came in sixth in the event, recording a 41-1 toss. The 4x400-meter relay team turned in another runner-up performance for the UNC women, running a 3:50.29.
In the 800 meters, Colleen Farley (2:17.95) and Emily Hoffman (2:23.38) finished fourth and eighth, respectively. Erika Foushée placed fourth in the long jump with a 17-4 1/4 leap and Katelyn Kaltenbach came in ninth in the women's mile in 5:07.48 for the Tar Heels.
UNC returns to action next week with both the Armory Invitational in New York, N.Y. as well as the Carolina Invitational in Chapel Hill.
