CHAPEL HILL --- The North Carolina duo of Sophie Grabinski and Sanaz Marand came up one match short Monday, falling to Duke's Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson, 8-3, in the doubles final of the ITA Southeast Regional Indoor Championships at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. With the win, Mang and Granson earned an automatic bid to the ITA National Indoor Championships next weekend in Columbus, Ohio.
Grabinski and Marand, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, opened play Monday with an 8-3 victory over fifth-seeded Alex Hirsch and Sasha Kulikova of Wake Forest. Shortly after the UNC victory was clinched, Duke finished off top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Ani Mijacika and Federica Van Adrichem of Clemson, 8-4.
Mang and Granson took control of the final early, breaking Marand in the opening game and holding serve to go up 2-0. After the Tar Heels pulled to within 3-2 with a pair of holds, Duke took the five of the last six games of the pro set to clinch the 8-3 victory.
