GREENSBORO, N.C. Day two of the UNCG Southern Scuffle saw North Carolina's Ben Fiacco, Nick Tenpenny and Justin Dobies claim the seventh-place crown in their respective weight class. The Tar Heels ended the tournament tied for 15th with UNCG, accumulating a total of 45 points.
On day one of the tournament, Tenpenny dropped to the consolation bracket after his first bout at 184 pounds. However, the freshman from Bayville, N.J., bounced back and won five straight matches before losing to Tommy Spellman of Virginia Tech, 2-0. He then placed seventh as Josh Haines of Maryland withdrew. Tenpenny went 4-1 on the day.
Fiacco, the 157-pound sophomore, began the day with a technical fall loss but rebounded with a 3-2 victory over fellow Tar Heel Thomas Scotten. Fiacco then fell to No. 11 Matt Moley of Bloomsburg, 4-2. After the defeat, Fiacco found himself facing Binghamton's Nate Patterson for the seventh place finish. Fiacco won via decision 7-2.
Dobies, a junior from Garfield Heights, Ohio, dropped his first bout Sunday to the No. 5 nationally ranked heavyweight Ed Prendergast of Navy, 9-3. In the consolation bracket Dobies defeated ACC foe Pat Gilmore of Maryland, 9-3, but then fell to another nationally ranked opponent. Dobies lost to No. 17 Jermail Porter of Kent State, 6-4, placing him in the seventh place match versus Ryan Hsu of UNCG. Dobies pinned Hsu in 5:44.
Drew Forshey, the Tar Heel 125-pound grappler who went unbeaten on day one, began his day with a huge victory over the No. 9 ranked David Tomasette of Hofstra University. Forshey defeated Tomasette 9-5 but dropped his next bout 14-3 to Mike Sees of Bloomsburg. Unfortunately though, as he entered the consolation bracket, Forshey was removed due to medical issues.
The wrestlers ended the tournament tied with UNCG for 15th place. The reigning NCAA champion Minnesota Gopher won the Southern Scuffle with a team score of 182.
The Tar Heels begin the New Year competing in the Lone Star Duals in Texas and then begin their ACC portion of their schedule.
