Tar Heels Remain Unbeaten With Shutout Win Over Commodores

HOUSTON, TEXAS - North Carolina's No. 22 men's tennis team completed a successful weekend trip to the Lone Star State by beating Vanderbilt 4-0 Saturday afternoon at the Met Center in downtown Houston. On Friday, UNC handed No. 30 Rice its first loss of the season 4-2 at the Met Center.
Earlier in the week UNC had shutout wins over Howard and Campbell and the week's activity pushed Carolina to a 6-0 overall record heading into a home match next Saturday against South Carolina at 1 p.m. The Gamecocks are currently ranked No. 39. Like the Tar Heels, the Gamecocks are 6-0 this year.
The Tar Heels won a tight doubles point against the Commodores Saturday and then won three singles matches in straight sets. The match was suspended with Carolina leading the other three singles matches that were on the court.
The doubles point was a barnburner. The UNC doubles team of Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney easily won their match at No. 3 by an 8-4 score over Andy Mack and Nathan Sachs but the matches at No. 1 and No. 2 both went to tiebreakers. UNC's Lenny Gullan and David Stone lost at the No. 1 spot in an 8-6 tiebreaker but North Carolina was able to claim the point with Sebastian Guejman and Stefan Hardy persevering to overcome Nick Cromydas and Evan Defaux 10-8 in the tiebreaker.
Now up 1-0, Carolina rushed to three single set wins, led in the third set of two others that were suspended and won the first set and was in a second set tiebreaker at the other spot.
Sophomore Taylor Fogleman put UNC up 2-0 at No. 5 with a dominant win over Nathan Sachs, who usually plays No. 3 for the Commodores. Fogleman lost only two games in the match. Freshman Stefan Hardy, who went 4-0 in singles and in doubles during the week, vanquished Nick Cromydas 6-2, 6-3. The match was then clinched at No. 1 as 25th-ranked Benjamin Carlotti beat Ryan Preston of Vandy, 6-4, 7-5.
