No. 7 Tar Heels Come Up Short at No. 2 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- No. 7 North Carolina won the doubles point but could not hold on during singles play in a 5-2 loss at No. 2 Notre Dame Friday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. The Fighting Irish improved to 8-1 on the season, while UNC fell to 9-3.
Carolina got wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to hand the Irish just their third doubles loss in 38 matches. Sara Anundsen and Katrina Tsang, playing together for the first time, handily defeated Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft at No. 2, 8-2. After a Notre Dame win at No. 3, No. 24 Caitlin Collins and Sanaz Marand defeated Catrina and Christian Thompson 8-4 to clinch the doubles point.
After the Irish evened the scored with a win at No. 6 singles, No. 19 Tsang defeated Christian Thompson 6-3, 6-2. Catrina Thompson topped No. 33 Austin Smith at No. 1 to even the score before No. 31 Colleen Rielley pushed Notre Dame to the brink with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Anundsen at No. 3.
Despite leading in both sets, No. 73 Marand was unable to hold on to either lead, and Cosmina Ciobanu scored a 6-4, 7-6 (1) victory to clinch the match.
Carolina returns to action Sunday when the Tar Heels travel to Evanston, Ill., to face Northwestern at noon EST.
