NEW YORK --- Behind the fastest time recorded in the nation this year - and the 11th-fastest of all-time - the North Carolina women's distance medley relay team helped lead a Tar Heel charge to open up competition at the prestigious New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track in New York Friday.
Looking to defend the team title they won here last year, the Tar Heel women started off strong on the first day of competition, most notably with the scorching 11:04.63 time posted by the DMR team of Megan Kaltenbach, Callie Pottinger, Georgia Kloss and Brie Felnagle. The time easily met the automatic NCAA qualifying standard for the event and was a full 20 seconds faster than the second-place finishers. As well, the impressive run now stands as the fourth-fastest clocking in school history and set both the meet and Armory records. Kaltenbach, Kloss and Felnagle were all part of last year's DMR team that claimed the NCAA championship.
Additionally, Senior Kelly Fazekas helped pace the UNC women to a series of solid individual performances on day one, leading the way in the shot put with a season-best 49-7 3/4 toss. The mark gave her fifth place in the event. On the track, Colleen Farley picked up a sixth-place finish in the 800 meters with a 2:15.70 time.
Freshman La'Shonda Carter turned in a 5-4 1/4 height in the high jump to place 11th, and Tyra Johnson and Porscha Dobson each advanced through to the finals in the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles, respectively.
On the men's side, the distance medley team recorded a 10th-place finish, crossing the line in 10:10.90. Sophomore Brock Baker claimed fourth in the 5,000 meters, running a 14:56.13 and Edward Baldwin III turned a sixth-place effort in the collegiate long jump with his 22-2 1/4 mark.
More results and information, including live scoring during competition, can be found at the Armory Web site. Competition concludes on Saturday.
