MADISON, Wis. --- The No. 7 University of North Carolina women's tennis team fell just short in its bid for the ITA Indoor Team National Championship semifinals Friday, falling to No. 6 Georgia Tech 4-3 at the University of Wisconsin. The Tar Heels will meet No. 11 California Saturday in the consolation round.
Carolina (6-2) grabbed the early lead by taking the doubles point for the seventh time in eight dual matches. The Tar Heels swept the three matches for a 1-0 lead.
Georgia Tech (2-0) pulled ahead with a pair of singles wins at No. 3 and No. 5. No. 95 Christy Striplin defeated No. 19 Katrina Tsang 6-3, 6-3, while Tarryn Rudman took out Caitlin Collins 6-1, 7-5.
UNC evened the score with a win at the No. 1 position by Jenna Long. Long, the No. 7 singles player in the nation, defeated No. 15 Kristi Miller 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The Yellow Jackets then moved to the brink of victory with No. 25 Kirsten Flower's 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 33 Austin Smith.
But No. 73 Sanaz Marand evened the score at 3 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 64 Amanda Craddock at the No. 6 position.
