CHARLOTTE, NC - In a rain-soaked final round that featured two extended delays, the North Carolina women's golf team moved up one spot to take fourth place in the 2007 ACC Golf Championship. The Tar Heels posted a 23-over 311 on Sunday helping them overtake Virginia and improve three spots on their 2006 finish. Defending champion Duke won the tournament for the 12th straight time and 15th time overall. Wake Forest and Florida State finished in second and third, respectively.
"It was a tough back nine with those conditions this afternoon," said head coach Sally Austin."We were glad to move up to fourth place, but not entirely pleased with our play today. Katie Miller fought the conditions and had a great round for us today."
Senior Katie Miller posted a one-over 73 to help her to climb into seventh place on the overall leader board. Her 73 was the tied for the lowest round of the day. The top ten finish was her fourth of the year and best ever at the ACC Championship. Sophomore Sydney Crane also had her best ACC finish with a tie for 15th after carding a 79. Junior Ann Laney was the next Tar Heel finisher in a tie for 18th at 17-over. Sophomore Lauren Hunt made four Carolina golfers in the top 25 with a tie for 22nd.
Duke's Amanda Blumenhurst captured her second straight ACC individual title after a two-over 74 helped her overtake Florida State's Carolina Westrup for the championship. Blumenhurst finished the three-day event at four-under 212, identical to the score she posted in last year's championship. Her teammate Jennie Lee remained in third at one-over par while Virginia teammates Leah Wigger and Rachel Smith claimed fourth and fifth place.
The ACC Championship was worth one point in the annual Carlyle Cup competition between Duke and Carolina. The Blue Devils first place finish helped them secure the point and even the competition at 10.5-10.5.
