April 16, 2007
The seventh annual - and closest in history - Carlyle Cup competition between UNC and Duke continues this week with the last five points at stake.
The current score is tied, 10.5 to 10.5. The competition has never been deadlocked this late in the competition. Duke won the Carlyle Cup in 2001, 2003 and 2004. UNC won in 2002, 2005 and 2006. Twenty-three varsity sports compete, with 26 total points at stake.
The five remaining points are in women's lacrosse, Friday night at Duke; ACC rowing championship, Saturday at Clemson, ACC men's golf at the Old North State Club Friday-Sunday; and ACC men's and women's track and field, Friday-Sunday at Maryland. In rowing, men's golf and track and field, the point goes to the school finishing higher in the ACC championship.
The Tar Heels and Blue Devils could meet in ACC Tournament play in men's and women's lacrosse and men's and women's tennis, so the scoring in those sports will remain in play until after the respective conference tournaments.
UNC needs 13 points to retain the cup, while Duke must have at least 13.5 to win back the sterling silver and enamel trophy, which is light blue on one side and royal blue on the other. The overall score remained tied after Duke won points in men's tennis and women's golf last week. Carolina countered with points in baseball and women's tennis.
The Carlyle Cup is sponsored by Greensboro-based jeweler Carlyle & Co.
