CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team is expected to receive an at-large bid to the 64-team bracket for the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship Tuesday. The bids and hosting sites will be announced by the national committee Tuesday between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. live on ESPN News.
North Carolina finished the regular season 23-3 overall, 9-2 in the ACC regular season and 11-3 against ACC opponents overall. Carolina finished second in the ACC regular season and earned the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament.
Carolina beat Virginia Tech 4-2 in the ACC quarterfinal and then downed Florida State 4-3 in the ACC semifinals. The Tar Heels fell to nationally second-ranked Virginia 5-0 in the tournament final.
It is expected that the Tar Heels will host a regional tournament for the third time in history, all in the last four years. UNC hosted a regional in 2004, losing to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the regional final. Last year, Carolina hosted a regional and defeated Clemson, advancing to the NCAA Final 16 for the first time since 1993.
UNC is ranked No. 6 in this week's ITA poll. No. 1 singles player Benjamin Carlotti is ranked 72nd and No. 1 doubles team Lenny Gullan and David Stone are ranked 44th.
