Carlyle Cup Remains Tied

Carolina and Duke are tied at 13-13 in the seventh annual Carlyle Cup competition with just one possible event remaining that would decide an outright winner for 2006-07.
Both schools have advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The second-seeded Blue Devils beat LeMoyne in the first round and play host to Johns Hopkins on May 19. Carolina, seeded sixth, beat Richmond in the opening round and travels to Charlottesville, Va., to play the No. 3 Cavaliers. The Tar Heels won the regular-season matchup against Virginia, but the Cavaliers prevailed on UNC's home turf in the ACC Tournament championship game.
Should the Blue Devils and Tar Heels both win their quarterfinal round games, that would setup a national semifinal game between the two rivals on May 25 in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania.
If the teams play in the women's lacrosse national semifinal, it would also be a winner-take-all meeting for the 2006-07 Carlyle Cup.
The teams have split two contests this year - Duke won the regular-season match, 11-10 in Durham; Carolina won, 12-11, at Fetzer Field in an ACC semifinal.
Each school has won half of the one point that is at stake for the Carlyle Cup. The winner of a potential third match would claim the full one point and the Carlyle Cup, as well.
The two schools meet this Saturday, May 19, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament in Annapolis, Md., but no Carlyle Cup point is at stake because the Blue Devils have already beaten the Tar Heels twice this year.
Carolina and Duke have won three Carlyle Cups apiece. The Blue Devils prevailed in 2001, 2003 and 2004. Carolina took home the cup in 2002, 2005 and 2006.
If the women's lacrosse teams don't play in the NCAA Tournament, the 2006-07 competition ends in a 13-13 tie and Carolina would retain the sterling silver and enamel cup for another year.
