No. 12 Tar Heels Roll In Season Openers

CHAPEL HILL --- No. 12 North Carolina opened its 2008 spring season in impressive fashion, dispatching UNC Greensboro and Elon by matching 7-0 scores Friday at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center. The Tar Heels were dominant from the start, not dropping a set in 12 singles matches against the in-state foes.
UNC (2-0) got off to a quick start against UNCG (0-1), as No. 8 Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski dropped Ale Guerra and Arielle VonStrolley, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles. After the duos of Austin Smith and Meg Fanjoy and Katrina Tsang and Jelena Durisic swept the doubles point, the Tar Heels continued to roll in singles play.
Marand, the nation's No. 14 singles player, posted an impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2, with straight-set wins by Fanjoy and Laura Reichert at Nos. 6 and 5, respectively, quickly following to secure the match. Tsang, Smith and Durisic added wins to complete the sweep.
The evening match with Elon was another one-sided affair, as the Tar Heels dropped just one game in the three doubles matches. Marand and Grabinski won 8-0 at No. 1 just seconds after Tsand and Reichert triumphed at No. 2. Alexandra Jurewitz and Fanjoy finished the sweep with an 8-1 win at No. 3.
Marand paced the Tar Heels once again in singles, dropping just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Deanna Bailey at No. 1. Mabrey turned in a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6 to set up Durisic for the match-clincher, a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2. Fanjoy, Grabinski and Jurewitz all picked up wins to finish the spotless evening.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a trip to Knoxville to meet Tennessee on Jan. 21 at 1 p.m.
